Green City Madison
Jetzt erst recht.
NELSON INSTITUTE COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENTAL FORUM
Freiburg, Germany, is often called "the greenest city in the world." It's also Madison's sister city, allowing us a close look at how Freiburg infuses sustainability into its housing, transportation and energy infrastructure. We'll take a virtual tour of of the city and hear from three people who are closely involved with the Freiburg-Madison connection. They'll discuss the actions and policies needed to make a community more sustainable and create green job opportunities -- in Germany and here at home. We'll also hear about student internship opportunities in Freiburg. Forums are FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

Dear friends of Freiburg!
For 2011 the office of President and Vice President will be open for nominations. Tom Kaminski has asked that he not be considered for the offices, so we are soliciting nominations. Please send your nominations for President or Vice President to Tom Kaminski, Feel free to nominate yourself, or suggest others who might be interested. The new officers will be elected at the Annual Dinner in late Winter 2011.
HERE IS WHAT WAS DISCUSSED AT OUR BOARD MEETING OCTOBER 4, 2010:
It was decided to have our annual member meeting with dinner and entertainment again in the fine MATC lounge. We hope to have Freiburg's Manfred Hoefert tell us about the 1848 Baden revolutionairies who fled to the US. Kevin Kurdylo from the UW Max Kade Institute will then tell us about their accomplishments in the US Civil War. Both Hoefert and Kurdylo have exhaustively researched the 'carreers' of the Baden revolutionaires - Schurz, Hecker, Sigel, and will show us many documents from that time, 150+ years ago.
Our city will again be represented at Freiburg's Sister City fair, June 9-11, 2011, by Monika Ramsey, She will plan our display and offerings together with Gerry Brins plus Freiburg's Siri Thiesen and Manfred Hoefert. If you want to participate, the city of Freiburg will pay for hotel and meals during the fair for a few members, while your obligations are minimal.
John Jacoby remarked that our committee is part of the Madison sister-city umbrella group sponsored by the city. The benefits are a modest operating subsidy and insurance for group travel to Freiburg.
It was decided to try to arrange for a round-table where businesses, associations, and groups with a significant presence in both the Freiburg and Madison areas can meet. So far we are aware of the Bach Choirs, Rapid MRI development groups at the university hospitals in Freiburg and Madison, and the Slow-Foods movement.
The following people helped staff the information table at Saturday's farmers market this summer: Gerri Brins, Tom and Connie Seversin, Tom Kaminski, Sabine Moedersheim, Carolyn Hackler, Janice Gary and John Jacoby. They met many people with fond Freiburg memories, people who wanted to know about Freiburg's 'green' credentials, or ones who were just curious.
OUR REMAINING MEETINGS/STAMMTISCH THIS YEAR:
Sun, Oct 10, 5PM dinner a la carte in the GRUMPY TROLL BREWERY, 105 S. Second Street, Mount Horeb, WI 53572, 608-437-BREW (437-2739).
Cancelled is the Tue, Nov 16 talk about Growing Up in East Germany.
Mon, Dec 6, 2010, 6 PM, dinner and music at the Dorfhaus in Roxbury on the occasion of St. Nikolaus day. The Bavarian Smorgasboard will be the main menu choice.

Our Stammtisch at the Essen Haus, Saturday afternoon, Sept 18, 2010 was well received. The unique offerings included Spannferkel/pig roast acompanied by ‘America’s # 1 Polka band, Eddie Blazonczyk’s Versatones from Stevens Point. Thanks to Carol Heidenway who scheduled it during a Badger home game.
The Theory of Intelligence
Aus Madison wird uns folgende Geschichte berichtet:
'Well you see, Norm, it's like this .. ... . A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells.. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers.'
Hier ihre Eindrücke: “I had a most wonderful time in Freiburg in June, on the occasion of their sister-city fair. It was my first visit ever to this beautiful city and its charm and ambience immediately won me over. The people I met, including the wonderful, enthusiastic team who organized our Madison booth, were incredibly friendly and hospitable. I am happy to say that I made new friends and intend to visit them again. The international flair of the fair was fabulous. I got to meet people from some of the seven sister-cities, that were represented. It once again showed me how, first of all, interesting it is to get to know about different cultures, and how well people from different cultures get along, when there is no political agenda involved. I also had the incredible opportunity to visit Vauban, get a tour from Meinhard Hansen and learn about that internationally acclaimed self-sustainable neighborhood first-hand. Meinhard, by the way, will be in Madison this month to give lectures and hold workshops about his passion, the Passive House. I can only recommend that anyone, who has even an inkling of interest to visit Freiburg and the Black Forest, who is interested in history and beautiful scenery, should do so rather sooner than later.”
John Reindl aus Madison ist z. Zt. in Freiburg und hat bereits einen unserer Stammtische mit seiner Anwesenheit belebt: John Reindl is in Freiburg taking German at the Goethe Institut. He attends the sister city functions there, and wrote recently: “...8 of us met and had a really great time and several of us will be having follow up conversations. Also, some new UW students are being given a reception on the 15th of September, and I plan to attend that event. Freiburg is a truly wonderful city to be in.“
In Defense of Madison
Darin verteidigt Mayor Dave seine Politik: Our environmental legacy, starting with the Park & Pleasure Drive campaigns of a century ago and including pioneering recycling and bike path projects in the 1970s, laid the foundation for our status as one of the greenest cities anywhere. This is just in time for an international municipal competition for greenness related to attracting the very kind of creative entrepreneurial types who build the new economy und erinnert auch an Freiburg: In the summer of 2008, … coming back from a trip to our sister city of Freiburg, Germany, with vacation stops in Nice and Paris, I got a sense of what it feels like to be part of the modern, global economic reality. (I know that last sentence will drive right-wingers crazy, but we really do have a lot to learn from Europe and the rest of the world. Our insular, America First attitude is hurting our ability to compete in a global economy.)
